SUB PLANS FOR BLACK DAY

BLOCK 1: ENGLISH 12

This class is reading the book HEROES by Robert Cormier. They are a great group who seem to do a good job reading out loud OR on their own. During the last class we had, they worked on an INFORMATION MAP where they took notes on key concepts from the reading....they should continue to work on this....I would like them, during class, to make it their goal to read to page 47 of the book...also, they should add another category to their information map: 'How people who meet him react to him.' (they should understand what you mean by this). FINALLY, for five extra points on the vocab quiz which is on WEDNESDAY, they can create ten original sentences with their vocab words that are directly about stuff in the book so far!

BLOCK 2: HONORS ENGLISH

This class is a bit behind their "Orange day" counterpart....Please tell them that on Wednesday, we will finish/accomplish 'all things Lottery,' which is the story they read for today....we will do all notes, I will assign their paper, etc....What they SHOULD do in class today involves two things: First, they should have their laptops (they can get them in lockers if they need to) and research what "Romantic Literature" is...they should just take a few notes on this....then, they should read our next short story, which is Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birthmark." They should be able to find this on the Internet with no problem, since it is a very classic short story. They should use class time to read the story and take notes on the 'Romantic Period' of literature.

BLOCK 3: Lunch/Free period....yeay!

BLOCK 4: COLLEGE PREP ENGLISH

This class is reading the epic poem "Beowulf." Please tell them that when we have class again on Wednesday, they will be assigned a paper where they need to compare/contrast Beowulf to a modern day superhero....and I will provide with the notes/background to do this when I see them next....For today, however, they are to work on two things: First, they should read the third and final section of "Beowulf," 'The Death of Beowulf.' They only need to read/understand this (they should always expect a quiz!). Secondly, they should work on their own completing the 'Epic Hero Convention' graphic organizer that I have attached to the sub folder....the directions are pretty self explanatory, and they can use a different 'movie' or story for each of the 'indicators' on the sheet....please tell them this will set up what we will talk about on Wednesday when we go over epic hero 'stereotypes.'

Thursday, September 27, 2012

BLACK DAY

ENGLISH 12
1. VOcabulary
-we put words in sentences today for a participation grade....the test will be next WEDNESDAY so make sure to study!!
2. HEROES: There was a reading assignment to work on pages 20-37 and complete the information map topics I gave out....please know that on Monday, as I will not be here in class, the sub will have you work on completing this (as well as some more reading which you will do on your own in class)

HONORS
1. Literary Terms Test
2. "The Lottery"

2 BEOWULF

**With the sub on Monday, you will need to have your book, so please bring it!! YOu will be reading section 3 and doing a worksheet along with it....we will be working on our "genre" stuff on Wednesday!

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

ORANGE DAY

COLLEGE PREP
1. Beowulf
-quick reading check quiz on section 2
-go over notes and all material pertinent to section 2
-begin discussion of Epic Hero genre (take good notes)
-assign paper:

As we discussed, both the story AND the character of Beowulf have many of the conventions and stereotypes of a 'modern day superhero story. Compare/contrast the CHARACTER of Beowulf to a modern day superhero story, citing at least 3 examples from the text. Also, you should make sure to include how the two characters share/differ in the 'conventions' or 'rules' we went over in class. You should strive to have topic sentences in every paragraph. I will pay special attention to this.**We will discuss the due date next class

HONORS
1. The Lottery
-notes and discussion on literary terms, typological names, importance of tradition, etc.....
-share 'funny' or 'weird' traditions you researched...
-assign paper which is due next TUESDAY

In Shirley Jackson's THE LOTTERY, the characters partake in the yearly lottery simply because it is the way things have always been done....it is TRADITION, and as we see in the story, people do not want to change tradition.

Now move into a more modern context...what is TODAY'S 'lottery?' What is something that goes on in our  culture that is followed, observed, obeyed, or done simply because 'it has always been done this way? EVEN THOUGH it might be considered unreasonable, unjust, or flat out wrong! What is a 'tradition' we adhere to simply for tradition's sake? Pick one specific thing and describe....be careful NOT to generalize in this paper.
