5. I explained the "weirdness" of this week, and how things are all in flux....basically you should be working on two things this week: Your paper and catching up on the story...you need to be through ch 41 by Friday......

-go over the latest chapters by taking "mock" quiz and going over AND looking at photocopied study guide to discuss Cavalcantis, Valentine, etc....
-as a class, go through and find examples of how the Count uses ETHOS to reach his 'audience'...go over some of the examples you found....we will continue with them next time!
-Paper topic:

Argue that the rhetorical device of ETHOS is not only alive and well in our culture, but also that it is integral for impacting and influencing a particular function of our society.

(I will be OUT on Tuedsay at college visits with the juniors....Mrs McCowan will be in for me....she is going to help you folks work through this idea. At this time, I am not giving you a due date, since I want to discuss this stuff with you when I return. However, you should consider how we see ethos manifested in our culture in terms of politics, sports, comedians, bands, teachers in this school, etc!! This paper will be due probably, for you folks, NEXT Monday)

3. Your assignment for THURSDAY when I get back is to be through chapter 41 of the book. You have two class periods to do this....use the time to catch up if you need to!!!!

1. Oh hey. You should definitely look at yesterday's class blog for CP English....that is your plan as well. Your project is due MONDAY, and your paper is due WEDNESDAY! Many of you have been coming to see me with GREAT questions, and that is good. Keep it up. Two things to remember: For your project, make sure you have true visual appeal with your presentation. And for your paper, make sure you adequately argue THE OPPOSITE of what MOST folks would say when describing the Count (most people would say he is AWESOME, by the way!). You are supposed to argue that he ISNT awesome at all....that, actually, he is a weakminded, bad, pathetic, mean, negative, selfish, greedy, etc. character. I know you love to argue...here is your chance to do it and get graded, even!

1. Assign paper for MONTE CRISTO--this is due next TUESDAY
-Remember the quote I put on the board about how "revenge" is the product of a "shallow" mind...your job is to argue that, for all his strengths, the man known as the Count of Monte Cristo is actually a weak, inept, immoral, and--dare I say--bad character. The FOCUS CORRECTION AREA for this paper will be QUOTE INTEGRATION, which we will focus on next class!
2. We went to the library to work on the book PROJECT which will be due this FRIDAY. If you were absent, come see me ASAP!

SORRY...I forgot to do a blog yesterday

For ALL CP classes....make sure you understand the key points on the study guides I gave to you....we are all most done with the reading....seriously.....PLEASE read through chapter 55 for your next class!! HANG IN THERE!

FOR HONORS: Do two things....read the section section of Beowulf (The Battle with Grendel's Mom) and research a "hero," telling me their secret weapon, their arch enemy, and their special skillz. Yes, with a Z.

ENGLISH 12: NO READING ASSIGNMENT. The paper that was due to me last time was to write a SOLID paragraph comparing Paul Delmonte to one of the "vegetables." DO IT.

-writing assignment given on "secrets"....choose one of the three quotes on the board and explore its relationship to the story of Hamlet....you should be sure to have an identifiable thesis statement, and you should always quote from the text to support your claim! This is due next Thursday

-you must write a "mock" introduction for Thursday....this should include an attempt by you to create and craft good backstory in writing....you may write about whatever you want!

-for next class, write (one page or thereabouts) about a transcendent issue that exists in the story. Describe it adequately and with detail

-offer of extra credit for memorizing soliloquy...see me for more info
-test on matching characters
-read in class from Act 2.2 (go over R&G, their role, what Polonius and Claudius want done with Hamlet, etc.
-read in 2.2 up UNTIL the Players enter again ("You are welcome masters, welcome all...."
-hand out double sided sheet with quotes to put in 'dramatic situation'
-after doing the reading, choose one of the quotes to sketch out a dramatic situation AND research the "O Jepthah" quote (find out what it means, what is the allusion, etc)
