BLACK DAY--DAY B4 VACATION!!!

ENGLISH 12
1. Finish A CHRISTMAS CAROL
2. After the film, create either one quality inferential OR transcendent question....and, in one paragraph, answer your own question. This was classwork.
3. We will begin our next book after vacation....

HONORS

2. Be prepared to present ambition projects after vacation....the reading for vacation is to be through chapter 63...we are almost done, even!!

1. Same as Black Day.....you folks DO NOT have a reading assignment over vacation....but you need to be THROUGH 57 (that is what you needed to be thru for today)
2. Have a great vacation!
3. Be sure to finish your "ambition and power" project so you can present first thing after vacation!

2. Discuss voice and do voice activities (annoy, etc)
3. Due after vacation is a one page paragraph again, considering the following prompt:

What emotion is the most difficult for you to cope with? Anger, Fear, Jealousy, Love
Be sure to type at least a page....this will be graded on how well you describe your answer, and you need to have a solid topic sentence. ALSO, you need to use at least four transitional words!

-pass byack pyapers and discuss importance of topic sentences AND softening statements/not using blanket statements and vague assumptions....
-no reading assignment tonight, even!
-the assignment WAS to read 52-57....and we can answer questions about this next time...
-go to library for "ambition" research project....

-technical writing stuff (direction giving, laundry directions, etc....)
-assignment given for Wednesday: Write a full paragraph (1 page typed double spaced) on 'something you know well.' You will be graded (in a NITPICKY WAY, I might add) on a SOLID TOPIC SENTENCE, COHERENCE, and AT LEAST FOUR underlined transitional phrases.
if you fail to do "address" these grading areas, be prepared to have it passed back for you to do again!

2. Read A&P story in class....we took notes on the stereotypes of the teenage boy, perceptions, and some parts of the story....we began the reading in class...you were to finish the story and create THREE literal questions, THREE inferential questions, and ONE solid transcendent question.....

-go over test as way to discus reading....
-finish character list and discuss relationships with a super-duper chart!
-if you missed class, get the notes you missed today!

1. Seating chart, in order that everyone can be successful in English!
2. Reminder about 'writing on desk' problem....
3. Vocab
-test moved to THURSDAY....instead, we put words in sentences (15 of them) either about YOU or a TEACHER in the school!
4 Paragraph writing
-Coherence notes and activities....go over sheet and exercises
-do coherence exercise for next time (make sure you WRITE THE PARAGRAPH out)...in addition to this, write a paragraph--strong in coherence--that gives directions on how to do something you know well....

-reminder that your papers are due on WEDNESDAY....be sure to include SENTENCE VARIETY (this was an FCA for your college essay too) in your paper..I would like at least FOUR underlined examples of this....see me if you dont remember!
-discussion of book through chapter 41....two handouts/study guides given....we took a lot of notes...be sure to get them from someone if you were not here...
-read THROUGH chapter 47 for next time....
-next class we will begin putting together a character list and exploring relationships between characters...

1. See black day class.....this is what you guys did too....remember that I will be out on Friday....you will have a work period to catch up on reading, get through ch41, and work on paper which is due for you guys on THURSDAY!

1. Be prepared for the new seating chart into which you will be put next time....way too much notepassing, talking, trash left on floor, etc...
2. Paragraph writing
-collect homework
-continue working on topic sentences, details, etc.
-pick ten vocab words to include in a good coherent paragraph.....this was to have a topic sentence....it was due at the end of class....
3. KEEP IN MIND I WILL NOT BE IN CLASS FRIDAY....you will have a sub and you will be reading a story/writing about it. If you did not bring me your book, BRING IT!

ORANGE DAY

HONORS
1. PLEASE look at Friday's BLACK DAY blog for a good explanation on your next paper....I promise to devote time on Wednesday to workshopping this idea and topic with you.
2. In today's class, we took the pop quiz through ch 33
3. We went over other good notes to know (Calvacatti, Valentine, etc....)
4. We read "ethos" article from MEN'S HEALTH magazine
5. I explained the "weirdness" of this week, and how things are all in flux....basically you should be working on two things this week: Your paper and catching up on the story...you need to be through ch 41 by Friday......
6. See me if you have any questions....this is a good week to use to catch up on stuff with the book!

COLLEGE PREP 9
1. New vocab words....test on Friday
2. Paragraph writing
-notes on topic sentences and paragraph unity
-worksheets on topic sentences
-brainstorming paragraph ideas...
-for next class, you need to write two half page paragraphs....the first one is "The worst thing about girls/boys" (pick either boys or girls) and the second one is free choice, "My favorite teacher," or "What I do over CHristmas vacation" or "the worst things about school"

1. Take vocab test with five point bonus offering
2. "Quitters Inc"
-take intro notes on story
-begin reading....stop to define certain words (pragmatist, for example!)
-we stopped together and we will all finish the story on Tuesday.
-There will be an 'in class' quiz on the story on Tuesday

HONORS
1. Your vocab quiz has been postponed until Tuesday...prepare for it!
2. "Monte Cristo"
-go over the latest chapters by taking "mock" quiz and going over AND looking at photocopied study guide to discuss Cavalcantis, Valentine, etc....
-as a class, go through and find examples of how the Count uses ETHOS to reach his 'audience'...go over some of the examples you found....we will continue with them next time!
-Paper topic:

Argue that the rhetorical device of ETHOS is not only alive and well in our culture, but also that it is integral for impacting and influencing a particular function of our society.

(I will be OUT on Tuedsay at college visits with the juniors....Mrs McCowan will be in for me....she is going to help you folks work through this idea. At this time, I am not giving you a due date, since I want to discuss this stuff with you when I return. However, you should consider how we see ethos manifested in our culture in terms of politics, sports, comedians, bands, teachers in this school, etc!! This paper will be due probably, for you folks, NEXT Monday)

3. Your assignment for THURSDAY when I get back is to be through chapter 41 of the book. You have two class periods to do this....use the time to catch up if you need to!!!!

ORANGE DAY

1. Same as black day, although you folks did not begin the "ethos article." You folks with read it in class on Monday. Be sure to do the reading through ch 33....the focus of class, however, on Monday, will revolve around ethos and how it works within the story thus far....

2. Shortened class because of NHS....after the test, we played "TA/Ps" word game....we will begin all paragraph writing "stuff" on Monday!
