-collect/go over notes about the character of Emily and 'clues' that tell us what is going to happen at the end....

-begin list of commonly misused homonyms, etc (we will finish next time)

-affect/effect/farther/further practice sheet
2. College Essay
-whip around room and share list of "clothing" that is significant to you
-read "Outfits," my own response to this prompt
-begin discussing importance of intros
-writing time to address this prompt: Describe what your "clothing" says about you as in individual"
This must be at least 1.5 pages long....rich in voice....rich in a creative and unusual lead!
-This is due PRINTED OUT on Friday.

-worksheet and put twenty words in sentences in order to review words
-STUDY the differences between these words, as a lot of you dont know them

1. Same as orange day class....minor differences though....quick game of inkypinky....create continuum for "The Bet" and discuss story....paper was assigned...PLEASE check yesterday's honors class blog for the exact assignment! Be sure to bring a working thesis to class on Monday....

-voice..."annoying" prompt to prove the differences that exist between our unique writing voices...
-for Monday, please do the following (it will be checked off for a grade!!): Brainstorm a list of your top 15 favorite pieces of "clothing" that you feel describes you as a person. "Clothing" does not just mean pants, shirts, etc....but, rather, all "accessories" (piercings, jewelery, tattoos, hats, things you carry with you, bags, etc etc....). The goal is to think about how your clothing identifies you as an individual....we will be using these lists in class in order to write in class on Monday!

2. UMO in guidance....many of you went to this presentation....

-with the time we had, we had a brief discussion of the story, lit terms, etc.
-collect literary device notes....
4. Due to time constraints, we will do our final story next time!
5. Paper--due next Thursday--assigned as the culmination of the short story unit...please have a working thesis for next class!:

How can a seemingly POSITIVE quality--such as loyalty, kindness, tenacity, etc--actually work towards DAMAGING a person's (or multiple people's) life? How can this seemingly good quality actually be "bad?" Use one or several stories we have read during this unit in order to explore this idea. Please note that a CLEAR THESIS is a must for this paper

-"collecting activity" where we make lists in order to generate topics....
-for ten minutes, write, expanding on one of the categories we did in the collecting activity
-model the Point Question Connect strategy with Brittany's writing
-trade papers and PQC to your partner's....give them good feedback...I collect all papers
-taking 'diet rice cake' words and turning them into 'dorito spicy' words!

-collect symbolism responses
-before handing in responses, take notes on the conflict, the symbolism, the setting
-discuss these notes and the rest of the essay....idea of how place changes, etc...
2. The vocab test will be FIRST THING ON WEDNESDAY
2. "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov
-read story on-line (see me if you would like a paper copy)
-take a good page of notes on ALL the literary devices you can find within the story....know that there is definitely irony, DRAMATIC irony, foil, and ALL THREE types of conflict in this story...I expect you to identify it all!

-examine possible topic--give doublesided sheet explaining essay
-college essay game: Kite or Clothesline?
-five minute writing prompt: What CD would you listen to for 24 hours and why? Which one would you NOT listen to and why? Bring this next time as we will use it in class!

-discuss inferences you made, symbolism, parallelism, and the rest of the stuff on the "points to ponder" side of your notes....
2. "Once More to the Lake" by EB White...
-read essay in class, and write the following response:
         Discuss how EB White uses symbolism  in his essay 'Once More to the Lake." Analyze one or 
         several examples of how regular, concrete things stand for something much deeper, thus adding 
         to the mood or tone of the essay....
-this essay is due next class!

-you folks read through page 61....now, together and on your own, you read through page 81 (the end of the chapter) and take notes on two things a) passages that show Francis being happy and b) passages showing the technical aspects of table tennis
-you wrote about a mentor you had who has taught you an important life lesson
-for a quiz grade, write about the life lessons that Larry seems to be teaching Francis thus far in the story....cite specific examples...write at least a half of a page
-collect books at end of class...you can give me the response next time....

Honors English
1. Same as the last OrangeDay plan....but we spent about 15 minutes in groups discussing the "outsidethebox" issues from the story

CP English
1. Beowulf
-all stereotype convention notes on Epic Hero
-discussion and notes on "Cultural Hero"

-we ran out of time, and on Tuesday, when we have class, we will continue for about ten minutes on the rest of the notes for this story
