FRESHMEN
1. OF MICE AND MEN
-take test on Steinbeck and reading thru 58
-go over test/characters/goings on of reading section
-read aloud, finishing chapter 3
-your assignment for next time is to read the entirety of ch 4--it ends of p 83
-in your notes, answer these two questions a) what similarities are there between Lennie and Crooks b) how does 'abnormality' affect any part of this chapter? i.e. who or what is abnormal??

-go over how your thesis statement should look--you should all follow some type of form like Due to the fact that____, ____, and ____, it follows that ________ (in this last blank should be your CLAIM!)
-discuss format body paragraphs for this paper, and how you should really focus on TRANSITIONING into your warrant.....for example, (DATA) Buster, the brother on Arrested Development, goes on a bike ride with his brother Michael, when George-Michael is too busy to go. (TRANSITION) One can assume from this fact (WARRANT) that Buster is, indeed, a mature and thoughtful individual, since he had the emotional intelligence enough to 'reach out' to Michael, when Michael was obviously in pain from being ditched by his own son....
-we spent the rest of the time in the library, with me conferencing with you on thesis statements (which were due today), sources, etc.
-by the end of next class on Friday, your OPENING PARAGRAPHS are going to be due...you will have time to work on these in class.

**Be working on this term paper each night.....it is going to be due NEXT WEEK!**

ORANGE DAY

1. Same as black.....a LOT of you were absent today....so make sure you see me and understand what is going on....you have your Claim Data Warrant response due on Tuesday. If you did not see Arrested Development with us in class, then your assignment is to pick a character from a show or movie you know well, and then make a solid, arguable claim about one of the characters. ALSO, we did not have the grammar quiz today, since so many of you were absent...we WILL have it on Tuesday (you should be prepared for it anyway!). IN ADDITION, you should have your preliminary thesis statement for your term paper on Tuesday.....we will go over them quickly and then go to the library.....

COLLEGE PREP 9
1. Romeo and Juliet
-perform modern retelling skits...
-give "mood writing sheets"....your assignment is this: Pick a character (any character you want) you can analyze in Act 5 of the play/film. THEN, decide which mood face is most prevalent for this character in Act 5.....take notes as we watch and analyze the film, since these will be collected as a participation grade....the writing assignment is to argue how your character displays the mood you chose (EXAMPLE: I choose 'angry.' Then, while watching the film, I take notes on all the examples I see of Romeo being 'angry.' I will then turn these notes into a convincing paper
-finish film together in class....

-From this point on, we are watching the rest of the film...you should definitely be taking notes on this, as the last test on Hamlet will be an open note test on Act 5 of the film!!! BE SMART AND TAKE GOOD NOTES!

-Analyze and collect data on episodes of Arrested Development, focusing on one particular character...your job is to write a claim, data, warrant response analyzing a character from the show...while watching the DVD, you should be collecting good, solid data
-This essay (which should be about 1.5 pages....) will be due on Monday
3. Term Paper
-we will go to the library on Monday after meeting in class....you should have a preliminary thesis statement to share on Monday....

1. Continue with film for Hamlet and take good notes on two prevailing moods you see (based on the sheet I gave you last class)...we will watch the film up to the start of Act 5, and then you will write about the strongest prevailing mood in Hamlet....remember to use at least four vocab words and one sentence with a colon
2. Please study for your vocab quiz (your second to last one!!) which will be on Thurs.
3. If you have read this blog--like a good student--come see me prior to Thursday, and I will give you the answer to a "secret bonus" worth a bunch of extra points....JUST for reading the blog!

-go over colons
-go over moods
-go over inferences
-on back, using 50 words and two sentences containing colons, answer the question: What is something you HAVE to do that you dont necessarily WANT to do?
2. Hamlet
-pass out mood sheets...use these to select two mood faces of your choice...as we watch the film, take notes on how Hamlet shows evidence of BEING in these two moods...you will write about this on Tuesday AND the notes will count as a participation grade
3. Keep studying vocab....we will have the quiz next week!!
