ENGLISH 12
1. IATC
-"test" is discussing and defining the differences between the terms LIVING and SURVIVING. After we do this in groups, the assignment was to explain which one YOU are doing. Are you LIVING? Or are you just merely SURVIVING. This should be at least a page and should include three examples/stories/anecdotes to explain!
-we will begin the film on THURS

-first of all, thanks for your attentiveness today as I had to "talk" a lot to explain the context of the time period, history, etc
-a brief intro to the life of Elizabethan English people
-begin notes on Hamlet characters, etc

-remember the FCAs for the paper: INTRO, TRANSITIONAL WORDS, SENTENCE ENRICHMENT (be sure to underline your examples of each one within your paper!!)

FRESHMEN
1. Vocab
-complicated list today, consisting of OWL review AND words with "ethnic" prefixes....
-be sure you know the a) definition of the prefix b) the definition of the vocab word I gave you as an example for each prefix
-we worked on researching and learning our OWN example for each prefix...you will need to know this for the test
-right now, the test will be on TUES or THURS of next week (stay tuned) because of the film, the LT test, Friday assembly, etc.....
2 Little Tree
-I collected your papers which were due today
-there WILL be a test on the book and this will occur AFTER we finish the film!!!

-go over "Bikes" again, paying attention to hyphenated modifiers
-writing prompt due after vacation: How do the Cherokees in the book differ from modern, Maine, middle class people in terms of their families, hobbies, values, health, living situations, passions, etc? The FCAs for this paper are a) GREAT topic sentence b) a hyphenated modifier c) at least four transition words and phrases--UNDERLINE all of these for me!
3. Finish the book for next class...it is 15 pages, even!!

-Google images class activity...this was collected and counted as a participation grade
-PLEASE study for the vocab test which will be on Friday

-read chapter 30 together...there are literally 2 pages left..read it just for yourself so you find out what happens
-we will finish the book in class on Friday after the quiz...also, we will watch the final 15 minutes of the film so you are able to piece things together

-share backstory example(s) (thanks Conner)
-read/discuss/debate "school board" and "discipline" in terms of how they work as an argumentative paper
-YOUR argumentative paper is due TUES after vacation, and the FCAs are 1. strong intro 2. at least five underlined transition words 3.sentence fluency-usage of semicolons
-we began worksheets on semicolon and colon usage...we will finish on Friday!

-read some of ch 28 aloud....you do silent reading to finish ch 28 AND ch 29 for Wednesday
-There will be a quiz, so make sure you read! The class was given almost 20 minutes to get a head start on the reading so I hope folks took advantage of it

HONORS ENGLISH

1. Vocab quiz today
2. OWL writing sheet review (further, affect, whose, etc)
3. Writing unit on argumentation
-share/read aloud/discuss topic sentences of "TV" prompts
-swap papers and examine for good intro with backstory, etc
-due next class: Look at your TV paragraph...imagine that you are going to write a full paper on this topic....craft an excellent intro paragraph to this paper (imaginary paper...you arent really writing it!) complete with backstory, general info, thesis statement, etc.
-give class a list of argumentative prompts from which to choose....go over list....I gave no due date for this yet...we will talk about it on Wednesday

1. OWLs
-using photocopied OWL newspaper packets, go through and find the errors and misplaced modifiers and general awkwardness that exists
-pick at least three of the errors and rewrite them so they read less awkward!
2. I AM THE CHEESE
-quickly go over ch 23 and 24 ....a lot of you did not give me the classwork from last time....get it to me so you GET THE GRADE YOU DESERVE!!!
-I gave you the option to do #6 on that sheet....give it to me next time for an extra credit test grade
-begin reading 25 together....finish this AND ch 26 for next class....we will have a quiz on this and we will be writing!

-teach and go over intro paragraphs, focusing on backstory
-read examples of good backstory in intro paragraphs
-collect "what I learned from TV" but I WILL NOT grade this yet....next time we will do some revision processes with intro paragraphs...we will use these papers
2. Vocabulary test will be next class

COLLEGE PREP 9
1. Little Tree
-notes/study guide to go over quickly on "Willow John"
-introduce "government intrusion" project (if you were absent, come see me and get the info!)
-work in library on research....remember that I want you to a) use at least one book b)summarize the terms you pick c) provide your opinion on the matter.....this project will be due on Friday....please have it typed

1.. Vocab-new words for a test to be given on FRIDAY
2. Writing
-notes and discussion on transitional words and how to integrate them into your writing
-Due for next class: A one page "paragraph" response to the idea "what I learned from TV." Pay VERY CLOSE attention to crafting a) a strong topic sentence b) coherent supporting sentences c) AT LEAST five underlined transitional words/phrases....even if you have to exaggerate them
-OWL worksheet on effect/affect, whose/who's etc....to keep our minds sharp....

FRESHMEN
-Vocab-new words for Friday's test
2. Little Tree
-read together, starting with the chapter "A night on the mountain." Read the rest in class, taking notes on examples/passages of Little Tree and Grandpa's "naivete." Hand these notes in before leaving
-leave your quote/philosophy essays on my desk before you leave
-for next class, read THROUGH "Willow John." Always expect a quiz

-share list of "faculty responses" to inspirational quotes, adages, sayings, etc.
-5 min freewrite to one of two possible quotes
-the assignment which is due Monday is this: Write about a quote that is meaningful, educational, inspirational, or important to you. This is an expository paper, so be sure to define, inform, explain, or describe what the quote means to you and how you relate to it. The Focus Correction Areas are TOPIC SENTENCE and TRANSITIONAL WORDS. This must be typed and at least a page long paragraph.
-Be sure to re-read THE SECRET OF RIDIN BIKES for Monday's class!
